Devices & features compatibility
oboku is a web app (PWA) and should therefore be available with any device that has a browser. May it be Safari, Chrome, Firefox, etc you should be able to visit the page and use most of the features.
If you want to learn more about the technologies behind oboku, please visit the Platform & Tech page.
That being said and because oboku uses lot of cutting edges technologies, the features you can use and your global experience may vary quite a bit.
As of today, chrome is the browser that support the most features and offer the best user experience. Firefox is also a very strong alternative and should not have any major downside.
Although we are testing the app on various browsers, we always make sure it works as expected on chrome at the very least. This is our default development platform.
By using Safari (apple devices) you might for example have a lot less storage available to download your books offline. Safari also does not provide any way to read the storage space used by the app and so we cannot gives you relevant information about your current space use.
Because we love the web and the freedom of choice it offers (for you and for us) unlike app stores we do not plan to release any native app in the near future. This means that we are dependant of each browser compatibilities. We consider it important to push the web forward.
The Android and iOS app you might found on the store are Native App with a wrapper to the web app. They will use your default browser under the hood.
If you find yourself having trouble using the app because you have safari or some old browser that does not play well with modern web technologie you can always try to install or use an other browser.
Features compatibility
Here is an explicit list of features that may vary depending on your browser or device
Prevent device from dimming screen when reading
Chrome, Edge, Opera
Safari, Firefox, Others
Synchronize & download from providers
Browsers which blocks popup by default will prevent you from login through providers such as Google, Dropbox etc. Depending on the provider and whether you can easily configure your browser you might be or not limited.
Chrome, Edge, Opera, Firefox
Safari, Others
Storage
Chrome, Edge, Opera, Firefox
Safari, Others
You will be able to download and access your content but you might not be able to have accurate information about how much space is being used.
Some browsers such as Safari Mobile do not support modern data type which forces oboku to use old and unoptimized storage method. As a result the app can be slower and even crash if you download and open huge file on older devices.
